Chick Lit is a genre of fiction dedicated to the young and independent single women of today’s modern era. It usually centers on the issues of modern women in a light hearted fashion.
“Confessions of a Shopaholic” (2000) Sophie Kinsella. This is the first in the “Shopaholic” series. The book centers on the main character that is in a series of financial debts because of her extravagant shopping habits. Each chapter of the book cleverly begins in the form of a letter from her bank.
“The Princess Diaries” (2000)Meg Cabot. The novel is written in an intriguing journal form. This fascinating book is about how an ordinary and rather dorky girl suddenly finds out that she is a Princess and must now rule her land.
“The Devil Wears Prada”(2003)Lauren Weisberger. This best selling novel is about a freshly graduated girl who becomes an assistant to a powerful fashion-magazine editor. Very soon her job becomes hellish as she has to deal with her near-evil boss.
“Bridget Jones Diary”(1996)Helen Fielding. The book is in the form of a personal diary and it chronicles the life, love and family problems of a single working woman in London. It is one of the most popular Chick Lit of all times.
“The Nanny Diaries”(2002)Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. The book is a satire on upper class New York life as viewed from the eyes of a nanny.
“Sex and the City”(1997)Candace Bushnell. The book, she claims was based on her and her friends’ lifestyles. The book is a typical best selling Chick Lit, full of high class fashion, hot men and fancy lifestyles. It created the popular female character of Carrie Bradshaw.
“Lucy Sullivan is getting married”(1996)Marian Keyes. This book like her others is rather a dark take on the Chick Lit genre. It chronicles the life of a perpetually broke girl, who is constantly unlucky in love. An alcoholic father only adds to her problems.
“The Zoya Factor”(2008)Anuja Chauhan. The book is about a girl being the official lucky charm for the Indian Cricket team. It is a huge hit in the genre and has proved India’s Chick Lit capabilities.
“Trust Me”(2006)Rajashree. This is the best selling Indian Chick Lit. The book is set in the backdrop of the Bollywood Film Industry and is about love, friendship and heart-break.
“Shopaholic and Baby”(2007)Sophie Kinsella. The latest in the Shopaholic series, the book is a follow up on the central character’s married life, as a personal shopper in a store as well as a mother-to-be.
